Where Can You Get Food Late at Night in Grand Cayman?

Not many places. Most kitchens on the island stop serving around ten, and that has been true for a long time. The Cayman Compass ran a piece on it years ago and found the same thing: after ten, the choices thin out fast. The restaurant it named as having perhaps the latest hours on the island closed at midnight.

Ask on a travel forum and you will get the same answer, season after season. Late-night dining here is limited, and most of what stays open is a bar with a snack menu rather than a kitchen.

We serve until midnight Sunday through Thursday, until 1am on Saturday, and until 3:30am on Friday. Full menu, hot, the whole time.

In town

What restaurants are open late in George Town?

Fewer than you would think. Almost every late-night spot people name sits on Seven Mile Beach or out towards West Bay. They are good places. They are just not in town.

If you are in George Town after ten — coming off a shift, leaving a bar, waiting on an early flight — the list is short. We are on Eastern Avenue, a few minutes inland from the waterfront, and the kitchen is still going.

It is a plain, unglamorous crop that happens to be the backbone of a lot of Caribbean cooking. Naming a restaurant after it was not an accident.

the lunch rush

Do You Serve the Full Menu Late at Night?

Yes. The same board runs at two in the morning as at two in the afternoon. No reduced late list, no reheated tray, no bar snacks standing in for dinner.

Oxtail

CI$9 / 12

Slow-cooked until it falls off the bone, in a thick brown gravy.

Curry Goat

CI$9 / 12

Bone-in, in a proper Caribbean curry. Hotter than most on the island.

Jerk Chicken

CI$9 / 12

Marinated overnight in scotch bonnet and allspice, then grilled.

Stew Beef

CI$9 / 12

Braised down slow with onions and peppers. The weekday plate.

Fried Chicken

CI$9 / 12

Crisp outside, seasoned all the way through. Cheapest full plate we do.

Curry Veggie Chunks

CI$9 / 12

Same curry base as the goat. A full plate, not an afterthought.

the other end of the day

What restaurants open early in Grand Cayman?

We open at six, every day of the week.

That is early enough for a dive boat, a construction shift, a nurse coming off nights, or a run to the airport. Most places on the island are not pouring coffee until seven or eight.

Context

Why do so few restaurants stay open late in Grand Cayman?

Two reasons, mostly.

The first is licensing. Under the Music and Dancing (Control) Act, music on Sundays has to stay at a low background level, and Saturday nights wind down across the island. Only a small number of venues, nearly all on Seven Mile Beach, hold licences to trade into the early hours. A kitchen that does not depend on a music licence is in a different position.

The second is the rhythm of the island. People come here to dive and to sit on a beach, and both of those start early and finish early. Restaurants have built around that for decades.

It leaves a gap. Shift workers, night staff, anyone landing on a late flight — the island empties out on them at ten o’clock.
